Vintage Fall Fashion With a Splash of Color

by Casey Capachi and Joseph Natividad

Have you ever looked back at old pictures of actresses in the 20s or 50s and thought "I wish glamour like that still existed." Well this fall, it does.
Say goodbye to the billowy layers of spring because a sleeker, more feminine silhouette is in favor this autumn. Try high-waisted bottoms or a bejeweled brooch for a sophisticated change.
But if you're a modern girl and think fall's retro looks are too old fashioned just remember that this season's color palette is even richer than spring's. A pop of Technicolor here and there- like in a shoe, thin belt, or argyle sock is key. Colors hot this season include crimson, wine, copper, green, gold, cobalt blue, metallic hues, and the color of the season: purple.
However, colors are just as important as fabrics. Black patent leather reigns supreme in shoes, belts, and bags. Knit apparel is now grunge chic in jackets, dresses, and thermal shirts. On the runway designers placed an emphasis in texture: making things bigger, more embroidered, quilted and more cabled than ever. The season's trends are clearly for fashion forward girls who aren't afraid to mix and match their outfits with an array of colors and textures.
If you're usually a tomboy, this fall you'll be Lady Luck in the season's boyish fashions. Blazers, pantsuits, and fedoras are earning high points with style icons aiming for modern androgyny.
As for beauty, the more polished, the better. Take inspiration from the 1940s. The red lip is back in style as well as red nails. Try winged black eye liner for dramatic eyes. For hair, pressed waves and low ponytails with curled ends will complement a vintage-inspired outfit.
The newest trends will have you wondering whether Christina Aguilera's retro look is really that outdated.
